Follow this golden rule and never get miss out!

So to give you a bit of a back story, we always have our itinerary fairly set in stone about 6 months ahead of time. Sure, there are te odd day or two here and there that need to be fleshed out but we have the bulk of our accommodation and car hire sorted plus a few things highlighted on the calendar. We had originally mapped out our adventure using very little logic but solely based on our wants and desires without a thought of practicality (an approach we don't encourage or recommend).

But just because you have a plan doesn't mean that it'll all go to plan and if you follow us on instagram, then you'll know that the car hire was an absolute scam and we had to walk away from money left on the car merchants table. The power to walk away from a bad situation is key to smart travel.

In walking away from the sticky situation in Albania, we pivoted our adventures to Montenegro and the universe heard us and responded to our dilemma. We pinch ourselves daily at how beautiful Kotor is and our accommodation is absolutely remarkable. All of that was eclipsed today when we found the deal of the year!...and it was only possible because we follow one golden rule when booking accommodation. Seriously, if you're booking accommodation you always ensure that you follow this GOLDEN RULE...

...you can cancel your accommodation on short notice and for no extra charge.

For reference, our usual budget for accommodation hovers around the $60-$70AUD per night.  We achieve this buy booking through Airbnb for 28+days and receiving the monthly discount. However, today we went deep into the bowels of Google and found, tucked away on a dusty shelf where nobody ever goes, accommodation in the Austrian Dolomites over Christmas and New Years for $150AUD a night! Like, take my money! The opportunity to experience a White Christmas a region of the world that literally invented Christmas is wild! 

Anyway, I'm getting carried away...the take home message is always make sure your accommodation can be cancelled because the next deal (or white Christmas) can be just around the corner. When opportunities present themselves, it would be a shame to miss them! Sometimes, there's a premium built into the accommodation cost but for us, it's worth it. We modify our trips all the time. Sometimes a country just doesn't vibe so we make plans and leave.
